Is there surely a medium that can completely and wholly represent objects? We have incessantly explored a wide variety of mediums such as painting, sculptural installation, text and photography in an effort to reproduce substances. Of these, photography has been highly regarded and widely recognized as the medium that can meet the human desire for reproduction.
Kim Sungsoo doubts the distortion of meaning between the real and the reproduction, while also admiring the completeness of the represented objects on display at a natural history museum. He realizes that physical and artificial actions to make perfect reproductions ironically bring about the differences from the originals. Animal models used for learning are objects that show such distortion of meaning. After making mutated animal models by integrating each animal’s distinctive features, Kim Sungsoo represents them through photography, which has been recognized as the perfect medium for representation and reproduction. He thereby reveals the distortion of meaning concealed in these models. In other words, he makes viewers perceive the difference between the real and the reproduction by revealing that they are not mere ‘copies’, but ‘reproductions’.

– 육영혜 기자/ <월간 포토넷> 2008년 12월호, 81-87쪽실체를 완벽하게 재현할 수 있는 매체가 과연 존재할까? 다양한 재현 매체에 대한 탐구는 그림, 조형물, 문자, 사진 등에 이르기까지 끊임없이 진행되어 왔다. 그중 사진의 발명은 인간의 재현 욕구를 비교적 가장 충실히 충족시키는 데에 그 가치를 크게 인정받았다.
김성수는 자연사박물관에 전시된 재현 대상들을 바라보면서 재현의 완성도에 감탄을 자아내는 한편 실체와 재현물 사이에 도사리는 의미의 왜곡을 의심하게 된다. 자연물과 가장 닮은 재현물을 만들기 위해 행해지는 물리적이고 인공적인 행위들이 아이러니하게도 실체와의 차이를 만드는 근원적인 행위임을 깨달은 것이다. 실제 동물과의 차이를 묵인한 채 학습의 도구로 사용되는 동물 모형 또한 이러한 의미의 왜곡을 상징적으로 드러내 보이는 대상이다. 김성수는 각 동물의 특징적인 형태들을 임의로 조합하여 변종된 동물 모형을 만들고, 이를 완벽에 가까운 재현과 복제의 매체로 인정받는 사진으로 박제함으로써 기존의 동물 모형이 교묘하게 감추고 있던 의미의 왜곡을 표면화시킨다. 다시 말해, 또 ‘하나’의 ‘복제물’이 아니라 또 ‘다른’ ‘재현물’임을 직접적으로 드러내 보임으로써 그 ‘차이를 인식’하도록 하는 것이다.
