I am interested in reconstructing “senses.” Here, “sense” refers to not only physical senses but the ones generated through actions of the mind. The act of sensing is triggered at the point when a personally resonant event takes place amid a series of everyday occurrences. For instance, a breakup in a relationship becomes an activator that elicits emotional senses such as sorrow, desperation, loneliness, anger and yearning, which would take so many words or sentences to describe completely. I try to reconstitute and visualize these indescribable senses in my painting. The specific moments come in all occurrences involving the first order relationship between you and me, the second order between them and me, and the third order between you and them.

The act of sensing something at the moment of a specific event completely knocks down the system of my senses. The event sometimes appears blurry like color poured down over a surface, and at other times, it looms as a clear image. The event happens. However, as time passes, the memory is likely to continue altering and changing. Thus, the senses felt at the start of the event fade, eventually leaving vague and empty images. In the course, I try to clearly remember the color of the initial feelings I had during the event. I also try to paint the closest likenesses to the senses. I call such an endeavoring process of visualizing senses, “reconstitution.”

The reconstitution starts by searching for the most similar images and text to the senses in order to create the closest images to depict such feelings. For this, I juxtapose and reorganize pieces of images taken from adverts, movies, animations and comic books, and through my paintings, I intend to render “a figure of the senses” that is figurative but closer to the sense itself. Seeming like a taxidermist of mass media images, I cut off original backgrounds, alter color and tear off parts of taken images, in aims to eliminate the original signs and create a figure of the senses. The resulted images from this process of disintegration dismiss the signs in the original contexts which formed an organic system within.

The images, now devoid of original signs, are placed onto a canvas, not being arranged but integrated again to form a visualization of the senses. Then, the integrated image is again deconstructed and reconstructed until it gets closest to the color and the shape I sensed at first. Paint runs and drips over the canvas. Then, another layer of paint is applied atop the previously built image and then is erased by yet another layer. The painting, through this repetitive process, can get closer to the figure of the senses but it still isn’t an exact copy of it. In the end, completion is not possible from the start and one process leads to another. Likewise, the images in my paintings appear to float like a series of unsettling sketches, seeming as if they had resided before I began to remember them. Images are falling down and dripping, empty and sometimes upside down and partly covered. Embracing all these imperfect elements, the senses float on the canvas in a body of incompletion.
